During the war, my husband was stationed at an army camp in a desert in California. I went to live there in order to be near him. I hated the place. I had never been so unhappy before. My husband was ordered out on a long-term duty, and I was left in a tiny shack (棚屋) alone. The heat was 13
almost 125 0F even in the shade of a cactus(仙人掌). No person to talk to. The wind blew non-stop, and all the food I ate, and the dry air I breathed, were filled with sand, sand, sand!

I was so sorry for myself that I wrote to my parents. I told them I was giving up and coming back home. I said I couldn’t stand it one minute longer. I would rather be in 14 ! My father answered my 15 with just two lines—two lines that will always sing in my memory—two lines that completely changed my life:

Two men looked out from prison bars.

One saw the mud, the other saw the stars.

I read those two lines over and over again. I was ashamed of myself. I made up my mind I would find out what was good in my present 16 ; I would look for the stars.

I made friends with the local people, and their reaction amazed me. They gave me presents of their favorite artworks which they had 17 to sell to tourists. I studied the delightful forms of the cactus. I watched for the desert sunsets, and 18 for seashells that had been left there millions of years ago when the desert had been an ocean 19 .

What brought about this unbelievable change in me? The desert hadn’t changed, but I had. I had changed my attitude. And by doing so, I changed an unhappy experience into the most amazing adventure of my life. I was excited by this new world that I had discovered. I had looked out of my self-created prison and 20 the stars.

18. A. asked     B. waited     C. searched     D. headed

19. A. surface     B. floor     C. rock     D. level

20. A. found     B. counted     C. moved     D. reached

I went out to breakfast this morning to meet a friend. Everything was lovely. But what wasn’t so lovely was the lady who took our order. She spoke in a way that was unhappy, certainly not friendly, and sort of rude.

When it came to my turn to come near to her and order. I thought to myself, “What can I do here to make her day?” Surely there must be something I can sincerely compliment (称赞) her on. Then there it was and I knew immediately. It was her voice. She had the most unbelievably well-spoken and clear-voice. It was so good. That was it. That was what I would compliment her on.

So after she took my order and gave me the same unfriendly attitude, I told her. “I hope you don’t mind me saying but you have the most amazing voice. It’s so clear, well-spoken and sounds so professional.” I told her how she honestly had one of those voices that would be perfect for announcements or even radio. Her whole face lit up. She smiled (the first time I had seen her do so) and as I left and walked away, I noticed her Whole attitude change. The customer behind me received a completely different kind of service. A happier one. All because of what I did. Something so simple!

There was a time when this sort of thing would have embarrassed me. Or I’d have been way too shy and hard to say such a thing. Not now. Now I must! Why? Because I have the power. The power to completely change someone’s day by something as simple as a few kind words and being kind. And you have this power too. We all do.

C

The playing field is never even or equal. Your skills and attitude play a major role in the outcome. Knowing what you can do to have an advantage can make the difference between success and failure.

My kids tell me it’s unfair to play with the big children. I tell them that’s right. Unfairness is a good thing. There is more to be gained by the effort when things seem unfair. It is true that many things in the world are unfair. But unfair things usually can be a boon to you. For example, the early bird catches the worm. It is unfair that the bird that sleeps in misses out on breakfast but it is nice to know that if it gets up early it is sure to get the worm.

I always try to explain to my kids that complaining about how unfair something is will get them nowhere. Instead, make the most out of it and get on the other side of it. Once you do that, you are in the advantage. Above all, you have to focus on gaining that Unfair advantage and in order to do that, build your inner strength. When you empower (武装) yourself, you are gaining skills or abilities, confidence and self-esteem.

You should look at your place in the world. Where do you want to be powerful financially, spiritually, emotionally, and physically? You are creating your own story when you empower yourself.

You can build all the advantages that you need to live the life that you want. If you haven’t yet, you need to make a list of all the things you want to experience in your new life. This will help you focus on building advantages so that you never have to say that it’s Not Fair. When you do this, then you will be able to realize that unfairness is a good thing and you will want to teach those around you to see unfairness in this way too.

28. Why does the writer use the example of the playing field?

A. To support his opinion.

B. To introduce his topic.

C. To tell us that having an advantage is needed.

D. To show skills and attitudes are important in playing games.

29. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Something helpful.     B. Something terrible.

C. Something nice.     D. Something scary.

30. What is the best way to deal with unfairness according to the writer?

A. Just accept it.     B. Try to change it.

C. Make good use of it.     D. Simply ignore it.

31. Why does the writer write this text?

A. To show the writer’s attitude to competitive sports.

B. To ask us to stop complaining about unfair things.

C. To encourage us to try our best in the playing field.

D. To advise us to be positive before unfair things.

D

If a president and a philosopher owed their success to the same secret, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here is what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth”. Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise. If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”

Are you still sitting there reading this? Get walking! It is not just the two great minds who made a case for it as a main creativity booster (推动). Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and novel ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81% more creative when walking, which is completely different from sitting. According to the study, walking outsidecompared with on a treadmill (跑步机)produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your creativity”, which refers to the brain as muscle. Our creative thinking is triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walkingwith your dog, a friend or alonefeeds creative thinking.

But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. A survey shows that Americans spend 87% of their time indoors. Being inside, you’re more likely to have less, energy. Without energy, you can’t wonder or create. Interrupting your routine with a walk can be a catalyst (催化剂) for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your comfort zone which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood or a park and observe people walking slowly around or birds singing. Being inside, you’re more likely to be lifeless, which means you don’t have enough energy to wonder or create.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creative goal that starts with walking? Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Walk just for exercise. Walk for wonder.

32. What does the underlined word “triggered” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. controlled. B. stopped. C. inspired. D. changed.

33. Why is the scenery important according to the text?

A. Americans spend most of their time enjoying it.

B. It will present people new chances.

C. It can build a comfort zone for people.

D. One can’t wonder or create without it.

34. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Nature exploration improves fitness.

B. Walking on a treadmill brings more energy.

C. Familiar surroundings encourage novel ideas.

D. Working indoors makes people less creative.

35. What is the best title for the text?

A. Scenery inspires new ideas. B. Your creativity lies in sweat.

C. Your brain is made for walking. D. Exercise feeds creative thinking.

About five weeks ago, I noticed the skin of our pet lizard (蜥蜴) was growing dusty. It worried me. I reported the strange surface on the skin of the lizard to my husband and children the next morning. Seconds later, our lizard appeared from its tank with its old skin flowing behind it.

I didn’t think about it much until a morning last week when I knocked my favorite teapot off the table. It broke into hundreds of pieces. As I cleaned up the mess, I wondered why we had been breaking so many things over the months.

The destruction started three months ago. It was my husband’s birthday. He had just lost his job. The uncertainty was starting to wear on us, so I wanted to do something special.

“Let’s make a cake for Dad!” I cried.

My kids cheered with joy. We baked, iced and sprinkled for most of the day. Candles on the cake! Balloons on the walls! Flowers on the table!

Two hours before my husband came back home from another job interview, my daughter climbed up to grab a glass vase from a high shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces of glass were everywhere. She sobbed loudly as I threw the cake away. My husband had banana pudding for his birthday.

Three days ago, the light in our living room suddenly went out. After several frustrating hours of unsuccessful attempts to fix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jordan documentary series The Last Dance.

The poignancy (辛酸) of Jordan retiring from his beloved basketball to play baseball and what had pushed him to make such a tough decision took me by surprise. As I watched him take off his basketball uniform and replace it with a baseball uniform, I saw him leaving behind the layer that no longer served him, just as our lizard had. Neither of them chose the moment that had transformed them. But they had to live with who they were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we have to learn to leave the past behind.

Humans do not lose skin as easily as other animals. The beginning of change is upsetting. The process is tiring. Damage changes us before we are ready. I see our lizard, raw and nearly new.

Jordan said that no matter how it ends, it starts with hope. With our sensitive, hopeful new skin, that is where we begin.

36. Why does the author mention The Last Dance in the passage?

A. To prove a theory.     B. To explain a fact.

C. To provide the background.     D. To develop the theme.

37. The underlined part “leaving behind the layer” in Paragraph 8 means _________.

A. getting rid of a bad habit     B. looking for a new job

C. letting go of the past     D. giving up an opportunity

38. What does the author most likely want to tell us?

A. Love of family helps us survive great hardships.

B. We should move on no matter what happens.

C. It’s not the end of the world if we break things.

D. Past experiences should be treasured.

A Lesson I Learnt from My Grandpa

When I was six years old, Grandpa sent me into the woods to gather pecans (美洲山核桃). Pecan picking was really hard work and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eyes. A large brown squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and disappeared in a large hole in the trunk. A moment later, the squirrel jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.

I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. I scooped all of those pecans into my basket. Now it was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. Therefore, I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the basket and said, “Well, well, how did you find so many?” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.

Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.

“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will survive the cold winter?”

“I didn’t think about that.” I said.

“I know,” Grandpa said, “But a good person should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work.”

I understood. After supper, I did the right thing.
